The album extended the free jazz ideas of Transition. The relaxed, serene feel of earlier ballads like "Welcome" was transformed into a new style of ballad on "Dearly Beloved" and "Attaining". This style involved very slow tempos, drum rolls and fills, and a louder, more intense feel than traditional jazz ballads. Like "Psalm" (from A Love Supreme), there is no real tune, just a scale or series of tones used to build an improvised theme. Coltrane's solos on the other tracks are also more extreme than on his earlier albums, and are reminiscent of the style of Albert Ayler and Pharaoh Sanders in their extensive use of altissimo and multiphonics. The title "Sun Ship" may have been inspired by Sun Ra's conception of free jazz as having an affinity with science fiction conceptions of human existence.

Drummer Isaac "Red" Holt and bassist Eldee Young, formerly members of Ramsey Lewis' jazz trio, formed a new outfit called the Young-Holt Trio with pianist Don Walker in 1966. They met with modest success, including the minor hit, "Wack-Wack", which charted at number 40 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1968, the group renamed itself Young-Holt Unlimited, and replaced Walker with Ken Chaney. Under their new name, the group scored a number three Hot 100 hit with "Soulful Strut", the backing instrumental track from Barbara Acklin's "Am I the Same Girl". "Soulful Strut" sold a million copies with the gold record awarded by the RIAA in January 1969, less than 3 months after the track's release. Follow-up releases would not match "Soulful Strut"'s commercial success, and the group disbanded by 1974, with Young and Holt keeping on playing in Chicago small bands.

Tracks 2 and 7 are wrongly credited as Davis compositions - they are both in fact by Eddie Vinson (see also Donna Lee for possible explanation of this). However, Vinson supposedly wrote these tunes for Davis, and this is probably how the confusion has occurred.

Schildkraut is the only musician not credited on the cover, and is otherwise almost unknown. The second session was a sextet with J. J. Johnson on trombone and Lucky Thompson on tenor saxophone, the rhythm section was the same for both sessions. The original 10" vinyl release included "I'll Remember April", recorded at the quintet session. When reissued on the 12" format, "Love Me or Leave Me" was substituted, and "I'll Remember April" can now be found on the album Blue Haze. The album's title track, a staple of Davis's live set for many years, was also covered by Bobby McFerrin on his 1987 album Spontaneous Inventions.
