Alonzo Mathis, better known by his stage name Gorilla Zoe is an American rapper and member of rap group Boyz N Da Hood. His solo debut album Welcome to the Zoo came out in 2007.
He replaced Young Jeezy as a member of Boyz N Da Hood. He first saw success after his single "Hood Figga" (explicitly titled "Hood Nigga") was released, followed by the collaborations with Yung Joc "Coffee Shop" and "Bottle Poppin'," which charted under several Billboard charts. His first solo album, Welcome to the Zoo, was released October 2007, peaking at #18 on the Billboard 200, #8 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, and #3 on Top Rap Albums.

Zoe stated in an interview with BritishHipHop.co.uk that his life has influenced his music.[5] His second solo album, Don't Feed Da Animals, featuring the single "Lost", was released on March 17, 2009.[6] Don't Feed Da Animals topped the Billboard Top Rap Albums chart.[4] "What It Is", featuring Rick Ross and Kollosus, and "Echo" followed.

John Barnes III stepfather was a pastor, and gospel and Christian rap were an influence while at school. Taking influence from Common, he turned from freestyle rhyming to crafting songs. In his early days in the music business, Johnson worked as a hype man for underground rap and soul artists such as Slum Village, Steve Spacek, Platinum Pied Pipers, and Emanon. He signed to Los Angeles independent label Sound in Color in 2004, choosing the label ahead of Interscope Records and Death Row Records. He contributed a few tracks to Exile's 2006 Dirty Science album, and self-pressed his debut Lifted EP in 2006. His debut album Below the Heavens was released in August 2007, Village Voice called it "one of the most thoughtful indie-rap releases in some time". Blu is also involved in several other projects including Johnson&Jonson (with Mainframe) and C.R.A.C. (with Ta'Raach).

Blu was named Rookie of the Year in 2007 by HipHopDX.

He was also named to XXL magazine's Top 10 Freshmen of 09'.
